Geotechnical BIM

Building Information Modeling (BIM) enables people, processes, and tools to effectively work together throughout the lifetime of the project. BIM principles can be applied also in geology and geotechnics, so we definitely see the future in BIM, and we fully support it.

In our view, the following three steps are the basis of the work according to BIM:

Basic part of our approach to BIM is the Stratigraphy software with other programs following. In the software, we start with collecting information and data about the location and continue to create a 3D model. Example of a workflow can include:

  • Loading current and historical maps of the locality
  • Loading geodetically surveyed terrain points
  • Loading existing boreholes and field test from public online sources
  • Definition of the planned site investigation and sending data to a mobile device
  • Upload of data about the site investigation from the mobile device, loading images and videos
  • Correction of boreholes and field tests, creating a report about the geological investigation
  • Loading data from the laboratory
  • Definition of soil profiles by interpreting the field tests
  • Creating geotechnical types of soils and rocks
  • Creating geological cross sections (fence diagrams)
  • Creating a 3D model from the cross sections
  • Calculating the parameters of the geotechnical types using the model
  • Exporting the 3D model, soil profiles, cross sections to other programs for geotechnical calculations

The GEO5 programs are not only able to communicate between each other, but also with many other programs.

  • Import and export tables and text files of many types (XLSX, ODS, TXT)
  • Load special data formats (eg. field test data – CPT, DMT, SPT, …)
  • Load objects created in other programs (DXF, DWG, LandXML)
  • Use global standards (AGS and in the future DIGGS)
  • Share data in standard formats into other programs (DXF, DWG, IFC, LandXML, XLSX, ODS)

  • The basis of the modelling is creation of a 3D subsoil model, which is then used for further modelling
  • In different construction stages, it is possible to model earthworks or add objects (structures)
  • In individual GEO5 programs, it is also possible to model the progress of the construction

BIM mainly provides big time savings and storage of all data in one place. It remains clear, how the data was processed, how it was simplified and interpreted.
